About this Event
Please meet your Arts and Humanities Society Representative at 11.45am outside the main entrance to the Museum on Blagrave Street (Reading, RG1 1QH) or inside if raining.
Reading Abbey Quarter lies at the heart of Reading and brings together many unique historic sites within the former grounds of Reading Abbey, once one of Europe's largest royal monasteries. You can explore 900 years of history in the Quarter, including the Abbey Ruins which are the burial place of King Henry I.
Led by expert guides, our visit will include a tour of the Abbey Quarter (approx 90 minutes) and Britain's Bayeux Tapestry (approx 1 hour), an ambitious late 19th century project undertaken by a group of Victorian embroiderers to recreate the Bayeux Tapestry
There will be a break of approximately one hour between the two tours tours giving you the chance to have some lunch or to take a look around the rest of Reading Museum whose galleries include the Huntley and Palmers Gallery, celebrating the history of the biscuit makers in Reading, as well as many Roman artefacts in the Silchester Gallery.
There are cafés and shops in the area or seats in Forbury Gardens to sit and take a break outside.
Please note that the Abbey Ruins are in the open air so please dress for the weather.
