About this Event
Author Zetta Elliott and Pittsburgh illustrator and 2021 Caldecott Honoree Noa Denmon will share A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart with attendees. The book presentation will be followed by a conversation about creative ways to use picture books in the classroom for Grades 3-5 including using books that allow every child to see themselves, see better versions of themselves, or find hope inspiration, or understanding.
A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart examines the complex emotions of a young Black boy after a young Black woman in his community was killed by police. The book was named an American Library Association Notable Book and a Notable Poetry Book by the National Council of Teachers of English.
Zetta Elliot is a Canadian-American feminist, author, poet, and playwright. A longtime advocate for diversity and equity, her books have received awards from the American Library Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Junior Library Guild. She lives in Chicago.
Noa Denmon is an award-winning illustrator who has worked with clients such as The New York Times, Google, Penguin, and Macmillan Publishers. She loves to uplift and depict the stories of the underrepresented and hopes to create work that displays humanity in all of its differences.
