About this Event

"Evolution of a Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House" is a powerful one-woman show in which writer/performer Morgan McCoy portrays 12 different characters. Her unforgettable performance of these women takes the audience on a journey from Africa during the 1600's to present day in America. This journey incorporates rich history, stories of love, and moments of joy and sorrow. Stories of women such as Phyllis Wheatley, Harriet Tubman, Maggie Walker, Madam C.J. Walker, Rosa Parks, Shirley Chisholm, Josephine Baker, and Michelle Obama are creatively told throughout this show.

"Evolution of a Black Girl" strategically describes current epidemics that challenge today's society in hopes that the voices of the past can offer solutions to save the future. It tells a universal story that transcends culture, age, and gender. The 12 monologues in the show are perfectly woven together and designed to educate, entertain, and encourage all who see it to strive for excellence!

The performance is sponsored by Newport News Historic Services and the Newsome House Foundation in celebration of the 34th anniversary of the Newsome House Museum and Cultural Center. Proceeds will benefit the Newsome House Foundation, a community organization that supports preservation and programming at the Newsome House and promotes awareness of Black history in Newport News.

The performance time is approximately one hour. The show will be followed by a 15-minute talkback with Morgan McCoy. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Online ticket sales end at 3pm on Friday, April 4. Eventbrite charges a small convenience fee. To purchase tickets in person, please visit the Newsome House at 2803 Oak Avenue on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays, between 1 and 4pm. In-person ticket sales are by cash or check only.
