Banjo player, singer, songwriter, percussive-dancer, choreographer and square-dance caller, Evie Ladin (pronounced EEvee LAYdin) has always been surrounded by music – credit to her upbringing as daughter of an international folk dance teacher, and an old-time folk music devotee, she grew up thinking that playing music, dancing, singing with others was what people do. Though entrenched in the traditional cultural arts of Appalachia, her home was in New York City, Baltimore, now Oakland – in cities, not mountains. But tradition bearers came through and played in her living room, with weekends spent at music festivals and house parties. Evie’s performances, recordings and teaching reconnect Appalachian music/dance with other African-Diaspora traditions, and have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Lincoln Center, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Celtic Connections. Evie tours internationally with Keith Terry and her Evie Ladin Band; and has produced numerous albums and instructional DVDs.
Aurora & Antheia is a trio devoted to exploring the beauty of melodic and rhythmic sound, texture, and in-the-moment improvisation. Their music creates immersive soundscapes that foster peace, self-reflection, and love. Formed in the fall of 2023, the trio first came together to compose and perform a full-length work for Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers in Kalamazoo, MI (May 2024). Since then, they have expanded their reach, performing in concert venues across Michigan, embarking on new collaborations, and releasing their debut full-length recording, Sonic Intimacy, in April 2025 (available on Spotify and Bandcamp).
At the heart of Aurora & Antheia’s work is the healing power of sound. The trio draws on centuries of wisdom surrounding vibration, resonance, and frequency—recognizing music’s ability to restore balance, open emotional landscapes, and create a shared sense of presence. Whether through the resonance of strings, the grounding pulse of percussion, or the delicate interplay of improvisation, their performances invite listeners into states of calm, renewal, and connection with the natural world.
The ensemble features violinist Cori Beth Somers, cellist and multi-instrumentalist Laurie Jarski, and percussionist Carolyn Koebel. Together, they bring over a century of collective musical experience, performing both as a trio and in countless ensembles over the past 15 years. All three musicians are classically trained with performance degrees, yet their artistry transcends tradition. Each has spent decades studying and performing diverse styles—including folk, jazz, classical, rock, and global traditions from Eastern Europe, Asia, India, and Africa.
