Evidence Bites #6

An astonishing wealth of relevant research exists on the subject of reading development. This is both a blessing and a curse. Navigating the evidence and deciding what concepts our colleagues need to grasp can be an overwhelming challenge for teachers and school leaders. This talk is designed for anyone who wants to overcome this challenge and to better help all pupils become capable, confident readers. In particular, this talk focuses upon:

• The English writing system and its consequences for teaching word recognition.
• The nature of reading fluency and strategies to support its development.
• The integrated bodies of knowledge that underpin comprehension.
• How the profession can reconceptualise the teaching of comprehension to achieve better outcomes and more meaningful experiences for all pupils.

Christopher Such is the author of The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading. He is an experienced teacher, school leader and reading consultant, who delivers professional development for schools, trusts and ITT providers on the subject of evidence-informed reading, mathematics teaching and curriculum development. He also works part-time as a member of Ambition Institute’s learning design team, recently co-designing their NPQ in Leading Literacy.

Our Evidence Bites events bring national voices in education out to us here in East Cambs & Fenland. They are deliberately very accessible and informal and always finish by 7pm so you can get home at a reasonable time!
