In 2023, the Alpine Club commissioned a film to revisit the history of Everest, from the realisation that it was the highest peak in the world in 1852 to its impact on Nepal today. Using historical film footage from John Noel, images from the early expeditions, and commentary from cultural historians and mountaineers, including Rebecca Stephens and Sir Chris Bonington, the film explores the significance of our fascination with the earth’s highest peak 100 after the disappearance of Mallory and Irvine in 1924. Produced by an all Cumbrian team, this special film screening will include an intro and Q & AAs the film highlights the perspective of both the climbers and Nepalese people involved, we are delighted to welcome to Rheged, Everest Climber Krish Thapa ( Ex Ghurka & SAS) who in conversation with Matt Sharman (Expedition leader and film maker) will reflect back on the film as well as discussing the issues around Everest today. With courage and optimism Krish brings a Nepalese perspective, and invites us to reflect on what the mountain can teach us about our own lives, about the respect nature deserves and the call to adventure, these landscapes inspire
