Potter’s Mill (the oldest mill in Iowa) was built in 1843 using locally quarried limestone and massive timber, and originally operated with a 20-foot waterwheel that powered flour production sold throughout the Midwest. Upgraded over time, including the installation of six turbines in the late 1860s, the mill continued operating even after a devastating 1896 flood destroyed its raceway and dam. Later transitioning to steam and electric power before closing in 1969 after more than a century of use. Falling into disuse for years, the mill was revitalized in the 1980s and today has been restored as part of the Riverview Vacations Resort, preserving its historic features while transforming it into a boutique inn and event venue with elegant suites and a 150-person event hall.
