Evensong: A Reflective Vesper Service
A reflective vesper service blending timeless literature with beautiful organ music, featuring several arrangements by Melvin West.
Evensong is a contemplative vesper service combining the beauty of literature and music. This special presentation features Michael Koller on organ and Loren Dickinson offering spoken word readings, with several musical selections arranged by Melvin West and a vocal solo by Elynn Rodriguez.
The idea for Evensong was born from the friendship of Loren Dickinson and Melvin West, who lived as neighbors for over twelve years during their teaching careers at Walla Walla College (now University). Their many conversations inspired a collaborative vision: a program where organ compositions and literary readings would intertwine to create a reflective and uplifting experience.
The result is Evensong—a harmonious blend of word and music, designed to refresh the spirit and celebrate the creative partnership of two longtime colleagues.
This particular program will feature arrangements of holiday favorites by J.S. Bach and Brahms, as well as recent works by Melvin West and Paul Fey, including an arrangement of the Widor Toccata combined with “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” The service will also include singing of several beloved carols and an improvisation by the organist, showcasing the full range of sounds from the Rieger organ—from the quietest whisper to the thundering full organ.
