Join us at the Community Workshop NOLA makerspace to learn basic woodworking skills and make a beautiful table of your own. In this 8 week workshop, you will learn how to design a table, purchase wood, use woodworking tools and equipment, and finishing techniques. You choose the design and dimensions of the table and purchase your own wood for your project, with the assistance of the instructor. At the end of the 6 weeks you will leave with a wealth of woodworking knowledge and a beautiful handmade table.
This workshop takes place every Wednesday from 5:30-8:30pm for 8 consecutive weeks.
This is a beginner workshop. No woodworking experience required.
**If you are interested in building a table with someone, couples tickets are available. Each couple makes one table.
Woodworking 101: An Introduction to Tablemaking ( 6 weeks)
Learning objectives:
- Shop safety
- Safety and proper use of tools (chop saw, jointer, planer, table saw, hand plane, orbital sander, pocket-hole jig, etc.)
- Creating woodworking plans
- Joinery techniques
- Selecting lumber (characteristics of wood and considerations when selecting wood for your project)
- Milling lumber (preparing lumber using the jointer and planer)
- Glue-up of tabletop
- Hand planning and sanding
- Project assembly
- finishing (stain and polyurethane)
