One of Colchester's most successful commercial enterprises is arguably Stanfield's, with a long history of adapting to changing consumer demands.Founder Charles E. Stanfield built the factory in 1882 on the Salmon River in Truro and is credited with developing and manufacturing the first knot-wool cardigan jackets and stocking wear. His biggest innovation was introducing heavy rib underwear with the famous "drop seat."
He sold the business in 1896 to his two sons, Frank and John, who decided to specialize in knitted merchandise. The brothers developed the "shrink-proof" process.
Their best advertising came from Yukon miners during the Klondike Trail Gold Rush of 1898 who declared there was no substitute for Stanfield's Unshrinkable Underwear.
