Join us for a special evening experiencing World War 2 history in action.
Firstly we will hear the story of The Battle of the Atlantic - the longest continuous military campaign in World War II.
At the battles core, was the Allied naval blockade of Germany. It pitted the feared U-Boats and other warships of the German Kriegsmarine (Navy) and Luftwaffe (Air Force) against the Allied navies.
The way the Germans conducted the U-boat campaign required relatively large volumes of radio traffic between U-boats and headquarters. This was thought to be safe, as the radio messages were encrypted using the Enigma cipher machine, which the Germans considered unbreakable.
These machines had rotors which changed daily and encrypted all messages into code. The British Government and Cypher school at Bletchley Park also thought this was unbreakable. But mathematician Alan Turing believed otherwise, and after capturing several Enigma rotors and keys during the sinking of 2 U-Boats, the British managed to create a machine that could break the code.
We will hear the story of these machines and how they were finally cracked. There will also be 2 working Enigma machines on display and we will be given a demonstration on how they work and see them actually communicate with each other.
