About this Event

Event Details

The history of LGBT+ literature is extensive, but if you’re anything like us, getting to all those classics can sometimes be a challenge.

That’s why staff from the Mulberry Street Library invite you to discuss an LGBT+ themed book either published in or written about a historical period!

This month, we’ll discuss Sappho’s fragments, which are available in multiple translations and formats, all of which are welcome:

  • The Complete Poems of Sappho, translated by Willis Barstone
  • If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, translated by Anne Carson
  • The Love Poems of Sappho, translated by Paul Roche
  • Sappho, translated by Mary Barnard
  • Included in Searching for Sappho: the Lost Songs and World of the First Woman Poet by Philip Freeman
  • Stung with Love: Poems and Fragments, translated by Aaron Poochigian

“Of the nine books of lyrics the ancient Greek poet Sappho is said to have composed, only one poem has survived complete. The rest are fragments. In this miraculous new translation, acclaimed poet and classicist Anne Carson presents all of Sappho’s fragments, in Greek and in English, as if on the ragged scraps of papyrus that preserve them, inviting a thrill of discovery and conjecture that can be described only as electric—or, to use Sappho’s words, as “thin fire ... racing under skin.” – from the publisher description of If Not, Winter.

‘Even In Another Time’ borrows its title from Anne Carson’s translation of a Sappho fragment: “someone will remember us / I say / even in another time.”

This event will take place in-person in the Mulberry Street Library Community Room on Lower Level 2. Please note that there is no restroom at this branch. Attendance is limited to the first 20 patrons. Registration is recommended but not required.
