EV Charging Stations 101 – Products | Design & Infrastructure | Energy Incentives & Rebates

During this session Lee “Bear” Smith of HOLT Architects will discuss the different types of electric vehicle charging stations and how to analyze available product hardware and software options. Bear will also discuss design considerations for different types of chargers and charger configurations as well as options for strategies for accessible design. Yossi Bronsnick of Taitem Engineering will provide an overview of infrastructure considerations and options and explain how to evaluate current needs against future adaptability. Cate Blakemore of HOLT Architects will discuss current LEED v4.1 credit LTc8 Electric Vehicles requirements and options as well as the proposed LEED v5 requirements. Chris Wallace of Franklin Energy will discuss the available incentive programs, their requirements and how to assess project applicability.

Learning Objectives – After attending this program, participants will be able to:

1. Identity and describe the different types of electric vehicle charging stations.

2. Discuss software options / protocols.

3. Identify building infrastructure impacts and analyze utility considerations.

4. Analyze layout/ planning considerations, including LEED v4.1 credit LTc8 Electric Vehicles requirements.

Event Description:

EV Beyond Buildings - Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Planning for Campuses & Communities

The City of Ithaca and Siemens Smart Infrastructure are developing a Fleet Electrification Roadmap for City vehicles (light, medium and heavy duty) and for municipal and shared services charging infrastructure. Using Ithaca as a case study, Sara Culotta, Siemens Energy and Sustainability Account Executive, will discuss how large organizations approach broad-scale electrification of vehicle fleets and the EV charging needs of its residents, employees, and visitors. The session will outline the components of campus or community-based EV charging infrastructure, going beyond the EV supply equipment (EVSE) to consider fleet assessment and rightsizing, public EV adoption trends, electrical power demand increases, available utility grid capacity, technologies to mitigate power constraints and support resiliency, and financial evaluation and optimization of operating and capital costs. The session will also describe EVSE equipment design and specification resources available online.

2. Describe the elements of EV infrastructure for community-level planning.

3. Analyze implementation and operational considerations for EV infrastructure.

Bear Smith is a Project Manager at HOLT Architects with over five years of architectural design experience focused on automotive dealerships. To navigate the new, but fast-growing EV industry, Bear worked closely with EV manufacturers to assess infrastructure and technology improvements. He also worked closely with clients to assess both short- and long-term solutions and to determine the best option that met current needs, but also allowed for future upgrades and growth

Cate Blakemore is an Associate and Architect at HOLT Architects who has extensive experience designing Healthcare projects throughout New York State. As a LEED acredited professional she has a strong focus in sustainable, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly architecture.

Yossi Bronsnick is President of and Partner at Taitem where he oversees the firm’s operations. He has been with Taitem since 2006. Prior to becoming president, he led Taitem’s engineering team in the design of many highly efficient and fossil fuel free buildings, many of which included electric vehicle charging stations and infrastructure for future chargers. Yossi is a licensed professional engineer in NY, PA, CO, MI, ME, and NH.

Chris Wallace

Chris is an Energy Advisor at Franklin Energy, who has been contracted by NYSEG & RG&E to conduct outreach and education for both contractors & business owners about the EV Make Ready program.

Chris has planned and coordinated both Level 2 & Level 3 charging projects throughout NY State. These have ranged from two-port projects to a 135-port project on a wide variety of properties from sole proprietorships to multi-national companies.

Sara Culotta

Sara Culotta is an Account Executive for Siemens Smart Infrastructure. She spearheads a wide range of clean energy projects in the Southern Tier, Central and Western regions of New York with a focus on large energy users in education, municipal, and commercial/industrial markets. Sara is also chairperson of the Tompkins County Legislature’s Climate and Sustainable Energy Advisory Board.
