Armagh Observatory was built in 1790 under the patronage of Archbishop Richard Robinson, and was the first independent commission by the famed architect Francis Johnston. The later addition of the Robinson Memorial Dome in 1885 showcases modular building techniques used by Howard Grubb to deliver observatory buildings all over the world uniquely designed to work with the optical telescopes he also provided.
These buildings demonstrate the unique site, which houses six movable domes, with seven domes in total, the highest for any site on the Island of Ireland. These tours are taken by our Museum's team, and are a short walking tour of the site, showcasing the architecture and telescopes.
