A talk with Niall Oddy
What did Europe mean to people during the Renaissance? In this talk, Niall Oddy introduces his book Writing Europe in Renaissance France, which examines how the idea of Europe emerged in parallel with new ideas about nationhood and identity. The sixteenth century was a period of great intellectual transformation as overseas voyages of exploration reshaped Europeans’ mental maps of the world. Within this changed picture of the world, the question of what ‘Europe’ meant emerged as a contentious issue.
