Presented in partnership with Langston Seattle
On the heels of her NYC 9/11 performance, award-winning singer-songwriter Eugenie Jones returns home to entertain audiences at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Described as a performer who makes audiences feel jazz, Jones is characterized by Seattle writer Charles Mudede as having "A voice that covers words like pieces of silk covering precious stones." Set apart from most jazz vocalists by her talents as a songwriter, lyricist, and community-service events producer, Jones sings and scats her way vivaciously through mainstream jazz. She is known for drawing listeners inside contemporary storylines through her original tunes that have earned her recognition as a cleverly gifted lyricist. Tonight's performance will take audience members on a journey through some of Jones most radio-played favorites. Standards you know and love will be presented along with Jones original compositions from her DownBeat 3.5-star rated "Black Lace Blue Tears" and her Jazz Week Review top-50 ranked, "Come Out Swingin'". The previous award winner of Earshot Jazz' NW Recording of the Year and NW Vocalist of the Year, Jones will also share a taste of her 2022 release Players, performing "The Gift of Life," a tune recorded with the night's featured band Velocity and co-written with Velocity bandleader and pianist Peter Adams. The other Velocity ensemble members include saxophonist Cliff Colon, bassist Rob Hutchinson, and drummer Brian Smith.
Velocity, a Tacoma-based band known for melding various musical styles into hard-hitting grooves and melodies, sharing the stage with the infectious, effervescent stylings of Jones, promises to make this a night to remember!
$10-20. In-person*, livestream, and VOD tickets available.
