WE NEED YOU! It is time to head for the hills... and the beaches... and Oregon's glorious waterways! The Many River's Group and Oregon Chapter are restarting outings programs in Eugene and across Oregon. Since the early days of its' founding the Sierra Club has combined conservation work with outdoor trips and adventures. The Club is committed to providing trip participants with safe andenjoyable experiences. To get people out there, we need a cadre of fun-loving and spirited volunteer leaders and we will assist in your training! Join us!
This free training is a significant step in the certification process for outings trip leaders with the Sierra Club. Aspiring trip leaders are presented fresh curriculum materials created by a task force of Sierra Club outdoor people from across the country. Discussions about planning trips, managing challenging leadership situations, weather, and an assortment of policies and guidelines are the agenda for this all-day, in-person workshop. First aid, participation in a provisional hike, and Sierra Club membership are the other requirements for trip leaders. For the OLT, you will be engaged in conversations about how to manage those unexpected situations beyond the trailhead. This workshop is a basic one - for advanced trips in mountaineering, rock climbing, rafting, and sea kayaking other requirements take additional training.
The instructor is the Outings Chair for the Chapter who spent a career teaching classes and creating adventures in wild areas across North America. The venue for the workshop is in Eugene. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Participants may want to bring food to share or a lunch to complement the snacks. Key policy documents and checklists will be shared with participants. You do not need to be a seasoned outdoor professional to contribute. Training and supervision is part of what makes Sierra Club trip leading accessible and enjoyable.
