Guitar and banjo wizard Eugene Chadbourne returns to Rhizome for the first time since his February 2018 performance with The Sunwatchers. Along with fellow North Carolinian Dave Menestres (bassist and founder of the Polyorchard Ensemble), Chadbourne will be performing for the first time since the pandemic, presenting his frenetic guitar and banjo stylings alongside his customary humorous vocals and witty lyricism.
Since his first recordings in 1976 on the Parachute label, Chadbourne has played and recorded with many of the greats from the free jazz scene (including Frank Lowe, John Zorn, Paul Lovens) as well as musicians from the indie rock and alternative music scenes (Sun City Girls, Camper Van Beethoven, Evan Johns). His prolific career includes over 200 releases on vinyl, CD, or cassettes wrapped in socks and there’s no sign this workaholic will be stopping anytime soon.
Opening the show is the Sardine Family Band, a ragtag group of local musicians who specialize in clams as well as sardines, playing music from the dirty south. With Amber Dunleavy on theremin, Vinnie Van Go-Go on bass, DJ Mackie on guitar, Finn McCool on trumpet, and Skizz Cyzyk on drums, the Sardine Family Band will set the stage for Dr. Chad’s madness and mayhem.
This is an outdoor show so bring chairs, umbrellas, or raincoats. In the event of inclement weather, the show may be moved indoors or to another location (TBD).
