Trinidad-born trumpeter, composer, and storyteller Etienne Charles is celebrated for his warm tone, rhythmic drive, and ability to uncover untold stories through music. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Awardee, he immerses himself in the cultures he portrays—traveling to regions of focus, meeting musicians and cultural leaders, and participating in local rituals to authentically capture their spirit.As an Afro-descendant artist, Charles connects the African diaspora and explores the roots of migration, often highlighting marginalized communities. His acclaimed projects include Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1, San Jose Suite, Creole Soul, and Folklore. His latest commissioned work, San Juan Hill, brings the history and culture of a legendary New York neighborhood to the concert stage.
