ABOUT
Trinidad-born Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller dedicated to exploring untold stories through his lush trumpet sound, varied compositional textures, and pulsating percussive grooves. His work engages listeners by addressing controversial subjects and invoking emotional responses.
A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Awardee, Charles immerses himself in the cultures he studies by traveling, meeting with musicians and cultural leaders, and participating in local rituals. His projects like "Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1," "San Jose Suite," "Creole Soul," and "Folklore" highlight marginalized communities and connect the Afro-descendant diaspora.
Charles believes in music as a tool for provoking thought and dialogue, using themes that address the status quo and historical parallels. His latest project, "San Juan Hill," explores the New York neighborhood’s culture, bringing it to the mainstage. His multidisciplinary performances incorporate original compositions, thematic improvisation, dance, short films, and spoken word.
In June 2012, Charles was honored in the US Congressional Record for his musical contributions. His 2013 album "Creole Soul" topped the Jazzweek chart for three weeks and was named #3 Jazz Album of the year. He received the Caribbean Heritage Trailblazer award in 2013 and the Michigan State University Teacher Scholar Award in 2016. Charles was a panelist and performer at the White House for Caribbean Heritage Month and debuted as producer and songwriter on Somi's "Petite Afrique," which won Outstanding Jazz Album at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards.
As a bandleader, Charles has performed at major festivals including Newport, Monterey, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Java, and Ottawa Jazz Festivals, as well as Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress. As a sideman, he has worked with Roberta Flack, Marcus Roberts, Marcus Miller, Count Basie Orchestra, and more. He has composed and arranged for Lincoln Center, Savannah Music Festival, Chamber Music America, Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble.
An educator and conductor, Charles has held residencies at Juilliard, Stanford, Columbia College Chicago, and others. He also leads Carnival bands in Trinidad, promoting artistic traditions with live brass bands playing vintage calypso and soca.
Charles is committed to uplifting people through live music, performing and conducting workshops in Trinidad and Tobago’s children's homes, schools, and prisons. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music.
