About this Event

The Ethnic & Women’s Studies Speaker Series features prominent scholars and artists in the field of Ethnic Studies to present their critical and groundbreaking works at Cal Poly Pomona. In the inaugural EWS Speaker Series, the EWS department has invited current Hawai‘i Poet Laureate (2003-2025), Dr. Brandy Nālani McDougall.

From the ahupuaʻa of Aʻapueo in Kula, Maui, Brandy Nālani McDougall (Kanaka ʻŌiwi of Hawaiʻi, Maui and Kauaʻi lineages, she/her/ʻo ia) is the author of two poetry collections, The Salt-Wind, Ka Makani Paʻakai (2008) and ʻĀina Hānau, Birth Land (2023) and a 2024 recipient of the Elliot Cades Award for Literature. Her critical monograph Finding Meaning: Kaona and Contemporary Hawaiian Literature (University of Arizona Press, 2016) is the first extensive study of contemporary Hawaiian literature and winner of the Beatrice Medicine Award. She is an Associate Professor of American Studies (specializing in Indigenous studies) at UH Mānoa.

The event will feature a book talk, poetry reading, and book signing of Dr. McDougall’s most recent poetry collection, ʻĀina Hānau, Birth Land.
