ETHICAL BEST PRACTICES IN COUNSELLING -Going way beyond the basics of seeking consent (updated/revised since the last public event in 2017).
About this Event

BACK BY DEMAND!

This jam-packed, fast-paced, updated workshop addresses much more than getting a signature on a consent form. We will focus on what makes a consent process invalid and how to make it legally valid (i.e., what is best practice for workers to document how informed consent was obtained – as the client’s signature may be meaningless). There will be ample emphasis on making the consent process meaningful and personalized for the client, which can help to reduce client drop outs and develop more engagement with the therapeutic process by building working alliance while gaining informed consent. Participants will also learn creative strategies to use in the consent process to help clients who cannot emotionally regulate well enough to give informed consent (e.g., due to high anxiety, trauma symptoms) in traditional ways.

This workshop caters to those working on the front line within some sort of helping/counselling context within Canada with some focus on Alberta issues (e.g., our Limitations Act) ---> Front line work includes family violence shelters, agency or private practice, outreach counselling, etc. Examples will be focused on adult 1:1 work, with brief reference to working with couples, youth, and groups (these topics are in the advanced consent/documentation workshop - to be held in Decemeber). There will be opportunities for discussion and questions.

There is an extensive handout and detailed learning objectives will be provided. There will also be Zoom polls during the workshop as well as an exit poll to gather your feedback.

FYI:

A. This workshop is part 1 of 2 of refresher of ethical best practices series related to consent and documentation. Part 1 focuses on 'everything you thought about consent but didn't know or forgot". The part 2 workshop offers strategies to make sure your session notes are efficient, succinct, offer continuing of care information, and protects your client's privacy. You do not need to attend part 1 to attend part 2; and you do not need to attend part 2 to attend part 1. There is also an advanced version (see the note below) but it requires completion of part 1 and part 2 within the last 5 years.

B. Each participant base fee, for a full, intense day presentation, is $140.00 Canadian and then there are no choice add on charges (i.e., GST & Eventbrite hosting fees, which are added on at the end). Your receipt, issued immediately via email, will include the GST amount.

C. This workshop has been updated since DPS last offered it to the public in 2018; most recently it was offered in April 2021 to sold out audiences. Another workshop was then held in May 2021 to meet the demand.

D. Cancellation policy: Full refund minus Eventbrite fees (approx. $9.00) no later than 7 days before the event. No refunds are available if requested on/after this period.

E. The workshop starts at 9:15 a.m. with opening remarks starting at 9:00 a.m.. You are asked to sign on anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to complete some housekeeping tasks (i.e., a poll, receive the handout, etc. ). Camera use is optional.

F. Do you need more information, please feel free to contact Dawn or Jolyn at [email protected] or use the contact tab on her webpage: www.dawn-mcbride.com

G. We need a minimal number of participants for this workshop to be held within 6 days of the event starting. If we do not reach this number then everyone will be refunded their full fees. [this workshop is held via Zoom pro]

H. Also in December (2021), there will be an advanced ethics specialty workshop pertaining specifically to the challenges of seeking consent and/or writing session notes for youth, documenting risk assessments, documenting group counselling sessions, documenting supervision issues, business tips to include in your consent forms, and mastering theme-based session notes via watching video sessions, etc. Attendance at this advance workshop requires your attendance at two workshops: DPS consent workshop and DPS documentation workshop, both within the last 5 years.

NOTE: If you would like to be on the mailing list for this advanced workshop, please send your request to be placed on DPS workshop email notification list to email: [email protected]
