About this Event

Arika, Glasgow International and Art Workers for Palestine Scotland warmly invite you to a collectively organised discussion and workshop focused on ethical fundraising.

Arika, Art Workers for Palestine Scotland and Glasgow International represent three very different organising and institutional approaches. We have come together to respond to wider calls for arts organisations to work with clear values around funding and fundraising. Art workers have expressed the need for transparency and accountability around arts organisations politics, not only in programming, but also their organisational structures, actions and financing. Specific calls have addressed organisations’ positions on equalities and struggles for liberation, labour rights, climate justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people.

We recognise tensions can exist between boards, staff, artists and activists when balancing ethics with political awareness, the wellbeing of artists and workers, and the maintenance of relevant programming in a rapidly changing and financially precarious landscape. In response, we invite peers and colleagues in the arts sector to join us in a workshop focused on ethical funding of the arts and how this might be defined and enacted in a meaningful way.

The afternoon aims to:

• Create a safe, confidential and generative space to discuss the ways in which the ethics of fundraising form an essential part of the Scottish cultural sector’s demonstrations of practical solidarity with Palestine and other movements.

• Explore the potential of ethical funding policies as a meaningful organisational tool and route to enacting core organisational aims and values, as expressed across other policies.

• Drawing on examples, discuss successful implementations of ethical funding policies.

• Discuss questions that may arise when creating and implementing ethical funding policies in Scotland.

• Explore next steps for creating and implementing ethical funding policies in organisational contexts and address obstacles that may occur.

• Create an opportunity to form or reaffirm collaborations with peers in order to meet the evolving demands of the sector together.

• Create an open space to discuss the possibility and practicalities of embedding ethical funding as a collective, sector-wide approach.
