In today’s evolving workplace, understanding employment law is a fundamental skill for HR professionals and line managers alike. To address this critical need, the CIPD Western Region is hosting an insightful event focused on equipping HR professionals with the knowledge to guide and support their line managers effectively in navigating the complex world of employment law.
It is important that HR professionals not only understand the essentials of employment law but also support line managers in understanding the employment law pitfalls around issues such as probation, bullying and harassment, disciplinary & grievance and protected disclosures. In doing so HR can assist line managers in effectively managing everyday issues which arise with the employees which they lead and manage. However, line managers do not always feels confident in handling these difficult people issues.
So how can this challenge be addressed?
Join us to hear from a panel of legal and HR experts who will provide insights and practical guidance on what HR professionals can do to assist line managers so that the role of the HR professional and the role of the Line Manager has greater clarity and is better aligned.
We will explore the critical areas of employment law that line managers must build capability in so they have the confidence to take ownership of the issues, with the appropriate support of the HR profession.
As a result HR can add value to their organisation by delivering the people agenda in support of the organisation’s people strategy.

Caoimhe Heery
Caoimhe is a Partner and Head of the Employment Law team at Flynn O'Driscoll, with over 17 years of legal experience in employment and litigation across Ireland and the UK and 8 years experience on the CIPD Western Region Committee!! Her expertise spans both contentious and non-contentious employment law, including advising on redundancy, disciplinary matters, performance management, and corporate immigration, as well as drafting policies, procedures, and employment contracts. Caoimhe also has significant experience in litigation, representing clients before the Workplace Relations Commission, Labour Court, and civil courts in cases ranging from employment injunctions to personal injury proceedings related to bullying, harassment, and stress. Additionally, she provides in-house training for corporate clients on various employment law topics. She has lectured and tutored on the Law Society professional courses and has contributed to legal and HR professional publications.
Geraldine Grady
Geraldine has 40+ years’ experience working in Human Resource Management; Industrial Relations; Conflict Resolution and Leadership and Management Development. Most recently as HR Manager at Galway Simon Community 2018-2023, Lecturer at NUI, Galway, for the past 17 years,
She holds a First-class honours Masters’ in HRM & IR; Diploma’s in Employment Law; and an accredited Life/Business Coach and Mentor
She teaches part-time at the NUI, Galway in the areas of Human Resource Management; Employment Law; Learning and Development; Leadership and Management; Management Skills; Organisational Change Management and Effective Communications in the Workplace.
Previously Owner/Director of STEP HR Services for 15 years, a specialised consultancy to deliver bespoke services to small and medium organisations in the West of Ireland.
Specialises in Conflict Management/Dispute Resolution in the workplace; and has conducted circa 100 independent workplace investigations on such issues as Disciplinary/Grievance; Under-Performance; Dignity at Work; and Equality/Diversity. Prepared cases and represented clients at the Right Commissioner hearings and currently at the Workplace Relations Commission.
Have published widely and co-author of ‘Work-Life Balance: Policies and Initiatives in Irish Organisations’, and ‘Leadership in the Irish Civil Service’.
Chartered member of CIPD and has been an active member of the regional committee in many roles including Chairperson.
Geraldine works with the SCUUL Mentoring programme in Galway providing support in Human Resource Management; Training and Development & Employment Law compliance; recruiting and managing talent in a start-up business setting.
