Northcott Creative Director Martin Berry talks to young author and Exeter University alum Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson about her remarkable success; a fascinating conversation covering her career to date, being a Sunday Times bestselling author, her time here in Exeter, and of course writing the novelisation of the latest Doctor Who Christmas special.Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson is the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Order of Legends trilogy. Inaugural winner of Future Worlds Prize Award in 2020, her debut novel, The Principle of Moments, was published in January 2024 by Gollancz. It was described by The Bookseller as ‘a meticulous space opera… and a century spanning love story, it heralds a new voice in the genre, and what may be a transformative series for the writer.’ The Financial Times commended it as ‘an assured, mature piece of work.’
This year, Esmie, a huge Doctor Who fan, joined the Whoniverse in writing the novelisation of 2023’s Christmas special The Church on Ruby Road, published by BBC Books.
Esmie holds a BA in English Literature and Classical Studies from the University of Exeter. As an author of Nigerian, Jamaican and British-Australian heritage, her work primarily focuses on people who live at the intersection of identities, whether that’s here on Earth, or in faraway galaxies of her own creation.
Esmie is also co-founder of Impact of Omission, an organisation dedicated to decolonising the UK’s compulsory curriculum, that has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, The Times and The Huffington Post.
