The Eastern Sound Collective is a growing community of creatives with pan-Asian roots, coming together to connect, collaborate, and support each other. We’d love for you to join us for our next gathering on Thursday, September 4th at 6.30PM!
✨ The evening will kick off with a workshop on Building Sustainable Art Practices with Jem Yoshioka:
About Jem:
Jem Yoshioka is an illustrator, writer and comic artist based in Pōneke, Wellington. Jem's debut graphic novel Folk Remedy Book 1 releases in September 2025, and she's busy working on Book 2. When not making comics you can find Jem dreaming up more story ideas and hanging out with her black cat. You can find her on social media @jemyoshioka most places (Instagram, BlueSky, TikTok, X)
Building Sustainable Art Practices:
In 2025 it feels like it's challenging enough to survive as a person, let alone thrive as an artist. But art has the unique power to nourish us in ways nothing else can. In this workshop Jem will share some of the strategies, habits and tools she uses to fit in making graphic novels alongside full time employment without burning out. This session is practice-agnostic, and is designed to facilitate discussion about what a sustainable art practice can look like, how to build one, and how we can support each other when things are tough. No resources required but feel free to bring any notebooks or tools you use to manage your art or your time
🍲 After that, we’ll share some kai (potluck style), have a relaxed kōrero
📍The gathering will be held at a cozy private space in Wellington CBD, easily accessible by public transport.
