Speaker: Jonnie Robinson
Jonnie's talk will give an introduction to the British Library's sound recordings of British accents and dialects and explain how they can be used to support research, teaching and learning for a variety of audiences. The talk will be illustrated with examples from the collections including a selection of content relating to Essex.
Jonnie Robinson is the British Library's Lead Curator for Spoken English and responsible for the Library's extensive collection of sound recordings of British accents and dialects. He has worked closely with material from two major nationwide surveys of regional speech, the Survey of English Dialects (1950-1961) and BBC Voices (2004-2005) and co-curated the world's first major exhibition on the English Language, Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices (2010-2011). His latest publication is A Thesaurus of English Dialect and Slang (2021).
