highlights from the archaeology of the Essex coastlineSpeaker: Ellen Heppell
Despite a childhood spent on holiday along the North Yorkshire and Northumberland coasts, Ellen Heppell has developed an appreciation of the very contrasting character of the Essex coast. In this talk she will provide an overview of some of the archaeological sites and monuments which can be found in the mud around the Essex coast and the changes around our coastal zone in recent years. She will also consider how the materials in the archives have contributed to our understanding of the landscape.
Ellen Heppell is a senior archaeologist in the Historic Environment Team of Archaeology South-East (part of UCL) and specialises in landscape and coastal archaeology. She has worked in Essex since the 1990s, taking part in numerous projects and contributed to publications in Essex Archaeology and History , East Anglian Archaeology and the Journal of Wetland Archaeology . This has included survey around the coast, and the loss of a number of wellies.
