About this Event

Speakers: Maria Medlycott and Zoe Bridges

Join us for what is fast becoming an annual tradition – Maria Medlycott’s round up of archaeology across the county, the intention of which is to show the range of archaeological fieldwork that is undertaken in Essex every year and how together it all adds to our understanding of the origins and development of Essex.

This year Maria will be discussing at sites in Chelmsford and Chesterford along with looking at what was found while laying a new pipeline and the problems of fitting 197 dead Saxons into one small hut. If those brief details have whetted your appetites, then make sure to book a ticket – they always sell out fast as this is a very popular talk.

And for this year, we will be welcoming Zoe Bridges and the Burnham u3a Archaeological Group to give a short introduction to the Burnham u3a Archaeological Group's 3 year excavation at the Old St Barnabas Church, Mayland in the Dengie Hundred. Zoe will talk about the Group's aims to discover what the church building would have looked like from 1200 to it's demolition in 1878. Some of the marvellous finds that the group have unearthed will be on display at this event.

Maria Medlycott is an ECC Senior Historic Environment Consultant for Place Services and has been involved in the archaeology of the county for many years.

Zoe Bridges has always wanted to be an archaeologist, but life took her down a totally different path. It took until retirement in 2021 and the Burnham u3a Archaeological Group asking for volunteers at their dig at Southminster Hall, that her childhood dream became a reality!

Please note that this event is of a longer duration as there are two speakers and a display
