Erin and Jim are excited to return to Lemon Rock Granada – last time was off the hook fun (see review below)! Sara Gee & Ramblin’ Matt will once again be joining us, for another fantastic evening of roots & blues!!
A review of last year’s show, by Griffin Jazz:
Erin Harpe and Jim Countryman, visiting Spain before an extensive UK tour, gave a large and lucky audience a night we will remember for a long time. Hypnotic singer extraordinaire and master of the Piedmont blues, subtly executing her fingerpicking as if she were playing with the strings, Erin offered an irresistible overview of traditional American music of the early decades of the twentieth century. She presented her own tracks, as well as references to Memphis Minnie, Luke Jordan, Blind Boy Fuller, Mississippi John Hurt, Lonnie Johnson, Slim Harpo and Muddy Waters, reaching into the 70’s with a version of John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery”, and also masterfully incorporating the uncommon Sippie Wallace tune “Women Be Wise”, also from Bonnie Raitt’s repertoire.
Embellishing her music with the kazoo on some tracks, Erin Harpe shares a deep connection with Jim Countryman, a perfect rhythm machine that brings bass and vocals. Erin & Jim convey distinction, elegance, good humor and an uncommon talent, it was a real privilege to be able to enjoy their concert last night, I hope it can be repeated soon.
Sara Gee & Ramblin Matt, who, besides being extraordinary musicians, are scholars and great connoisseurs of traditional American music from the beginning of the last century. Sara has a warm and powerful voice and Matt is a great guitar virtuoso, surprising us with a Granada-made cigar box guitar that sounded like a cannon. They set aside their own compositions last night to join the celebration with songs from Bessie Smith, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and a phenomenal rendition of Ida Cox’s “Wild Women Don’t Get The Blues.”
The finale with all four on stage was a blast, featuring an extended “Shake Your Hips,” “Rollin’ & Tumblin’,” and Memphis Minnie’s “What’s The Matter With The Mill.” So happy we stayed!
