Erik McIntyreMike Karoub-Mike Karoub has performed locally in the Royal Garden Trio for the soundtrack of the DIA commercial. He is a mainstay chamber musician and traditional jazz cellist in Detroit. He has performed nationally at The Smithsonian, The Kennedy Center, The Hollywood Bowl, as well as appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, hosted by Garrison KeillorWayne State University, Eastern Michigan University Studied cello with DSO members Permanent sub at Wyandotte schools and Director of summer band Guest conductor/String Clinician for Taylor & Utica Schools
Inspired by a melting pot of moods, styles, and spirit heard in recordings from the 1920s/30s (by such artists as Eddie Lang, Louis Armstrong, Blind Blake, Lonnie Johnson, Billie Holiday, Django Reinhardt, Blind Boy Fuller, Agustín Barrios Mangoré, The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers...), Erik McIntyre continues to hone a distinct musical voice that pays homage with a personal touch. His playing is spontaneous yet studious — synergizing “muse” and “ic”. Whether as soloist or sideman, his arrangements, improvisations, and compositions weave a tapestry that is filtered through a warm lens of nostalgia and invites listeners to his inner world.
Based in Flint, MI, he keeps a busy schedule performing as a soloist and within a community of artists that specialize in various roots traditions of early jazz, blues, country, and more. In addition to some schooling at Mott Community College and Oakland University, the majority of his training comes from a combination of learning on the bandstand, attending specialized music camps across the country, and mentorship of other musicians working in similar styles of music. He is a regular “fellow” and artist-in-residence at Matt Munisteri’s Red Hot Strings camp, and looks forward to contributing as professional mentor at the New York Hot Jazz camp in April 2024.
