About this Event

Erica McKeehen: Kitty & Greta

January 9–March 21, 2023

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 2, 5–7 p.m.

Note: The Arcade will be closed Wed, Nov 23–Sun, Nov 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday break. DEPS’ galleries will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 19, 2022, to Sunday January 8, 2023.

In "Kitty & Greta," Erica McKeehen presents two prominent bodies of imagery as separate pieces. "Flores Turquesas: Seven Years with Kitty Tornado" was made in collaboration with McKeehen’s best friend, muse, and fellow performer, Katina Marguerite (who has performed burlesque as Kitty Tornado since 2015). "Days of Rust: Self-Portraits" layers McKeehen’s own self-portraiture and writing, reflecting on her memories and coded identities as both a stage performer and sex worker (under the alias Greta-X).

When viewed together, the work resists voyeurism and spectacle and instead explores deep comradery and creative community through nuanced views of femme experience, sexuality, and autonomy.

This exhibition is partially sponsored by Columbia College’s Photography Department and the Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship. The Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship was established to encourage international travel among Photography students while completing a specific project and to support the experience by assisting with the costs of travel
