Eric Gales’ time is now. A genre-defying guitar virtuoso praised by Joe Bonamassa, Dave Navarro, and Mark Tremonti, the Memphis blues-rocker has left his mark on Grammy-nominated albums and the soundtrack of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. His latest release, Tribute To LJK, co-produced by Bonamassa and Josh Smith, is both a modern blues-rock powerhouse and a heartfelt homage to his late brother, Little Jimmy King. “This record has been a long time coming,” says Gales. “I wanted it to be the ultimate tribute… All of these songs except one are his originals.”
The album features an all-star cast: Buddy Guy, who once played with Little Jimmy, guests on “Somebody,” while Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, a vocal admirer, appears on “Rockin’ Horse Ride.” Both also cameo in Sinners, weaving the tribute into a broader cultural tapestry.
Gales traces the emotional roots of the project to his childhood in Memphis, where he was the youngest of five guitar-playing siblings. Inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson, he developed a unique style by flipping his guitar upside down. Signed to Elektra at 15, he burst onto the scene with The Eric Gales Band, earning Guitar World’s Best New Talent. “We weren’t the typical blues group,” he says. “A 16-year-old Black kid wailing blues-rock? That just wasn’t happening. I didn’t see it again until Kingfish came around.”
