Flowers of the Pea Family (Fabaceae), also known as legumes, can be recognised by their distictive petal structures. Some are solitary (as in Restharrow), but often they form dense flowerheads (as in clovers). The family contains a diverse range of species, including vetches, trefoils and woody shrubs such as gorse and broom. The unique geology and location of the Lizard peninsula make this a fantastic place to look for members of the pea family, including some rare species of clover.
In this workshop, we will begin in the classroom looking at the variety of species found in the pea family and learning the key features that can help identify them. We will then head out for a walk along the coast path, looking for and identifying the wild pea species we come across.
