Come along and learn the about Equine Parasite Management with Dr Leni Horner.Dr Leni Horner is an equine parasitologist associated with Federation University, where she has dedicated several years to researching horse immune responses to small strongyles, a common yet challenging group of parasites for horse owners. Based in the Ballarat area, Leni possesses valuable insights into local parasite behaviour and dynamics.
Leni's passion lies in disseminating the latest research findings and guidelines to horse owners. By doing so, she aims to empower owners to implement effective parasite management programs. Her work focuses on promoting horse health, while ensuring the efficacy of anthelmintic drugs, and addressing the critical issue of drug-resistant worm populations. Through education and practical strategies, Leni contributes to the long-term well-being of horses in her community.
This workshop will provide you with:
- an overview of common worm species infecting horses, their lifecycles, impact on equine health and prevalence of worm infections
- Drug responses and resistance in Victoria; how common equine worms respond to deworming treatments
- Current guidelines for equine parasite management, recommended practices for effective parasite control. Highlighting the importance of regular monitoring and strategic deworming for different categories of horses
It will include:
- A presentation from Dr Leni Horner on Equine Parasite Management
- Q&A session for participants to ask questions and discuss their experiences with equine parasites.
- You will have the chance to perform a faecal egg count using a sample from their own horse - guidance on interpreting results and making informed management decisions.

- A sample of your horse's faeces (if you would like to participate in the faecal egg count)
