Wagner: The Flying Dutchman overture
Rachmaninoff: Piano concerto no. 4 - soloist William Green
Sibelius: Symphony no. 2
Wagner wrote the opera 'The Flying Dutchman' in response to a dangerous journey to flee his debts in Riga, composing this exciting opera with ghosts and pirates and treasure chests to extricate himself from poverty and ignominy. Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto 4 was composed during a time of many journeys for the composer as a piano soloist, and reflects his physical restlessness and the internal restless journey of his soul. While Sibelius' Symphony 2 was written by the Finnish composer while travelling in Italy – creating a tumultuous work of wide horizons with light and power and a glorious ending heralding his homecoming and love of his country.
