About this Event

Ephemeral Art: Floral Ice Ornaments

Capturing a fleeting moment of life has been the pursuit of artists for millennia, however there is something uniquely gratifying to ephemeral art. Pausing to reflect on a fleeting moment of time, celebrating the present, and creating temporary beauty is truly a grounding experience. Work alongside artists and gardener Irina Grougan as she shares the technique and her talent for making breathtaking Floral Ice Ornaments. Using dried florals, dehydrated fruit, and evergreens, learn the process of making these gorgeous natural suncatchers. The class includes a lecture on the process, examples of Irina's ephemeral artistry, and all the materials necessary to make two (2) frozen ornaments. The class will take place on the evening of Tuesday, January 13th from 6 - 7:30 PM and then you will come back the following morning to pick up your artwork between 9:00 - 12:00 PM on January 14th.

Instructor & Bio: Irina is an active member, frequent visitor, and volunteer at The Botanic Garden. Her professional journey began with a degree in Teaching German and English as a Second Language and has encompassed teaching foreign languages to learners of all ages. Locally, she worked in Learning Services at Northwestern Michigan College for seven years before joining Grand Valley State University's Traverse City Regional Center, where she has been for over eight years.

While Irina is multilingual and passionate about foreign language education, her interests extend far beyond the classroom. She is equally devoted to plants, nature, art, and travel, and she continually seeks creative ways to share these passions with others. As an avid gardener, Irina finds joy in both growing and preserving plants—whether for food and sustenance or to capture and extend their beauty through photography and handcrafted projects.
