About this Event

The Philosophical Research Society is proud to present one of this century’s most strikingly original and evocative folk horror films, auteur director Mark Jenkin’s ENYS MEN

A wildlife volunteer on the uninhabited, titular island (pronounced Ennis Main) off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

An ode to Cornwall's natural beauty and rich folklore, including the mystery of its ancient standing stones, Jenkins film – shot on rich, vibrant, gorgeous 16mm film – is a visually beautiful and haunting entry into a rich tradition of folk horror. With a patient, hypnotic rhythm, its slow-burn dread unspools as if The Wicker Man by way of Béla Tarr, while simultaneously recalling other deep cut UK folk horror classics like Whistle and I’ll Come to You and experimental psychological explorations like The Other Side of Underneath.

Immersive, time-warping cinema best experienced as it eerily envelops a darkened theater, join us as we hole up in ENYS MEN!
