Envirothon is a challenge competition for senior students to support talent development in the intellectual and social-emotional domains.Teams of 4 students from different schools are presented with a challenge relating to the local environment. The problem replicates a ‘real world’ style issue linked to the curriculum areas of science and geography to make it purposeful.
Students then compete to collect data, apply reasoning and formulate a response to the challenge question. They communicate their findings to a panel of judges and their peers thus transferring their learning.
This develops talent in the social-emotional domain by influencing others and communicating effectively, and in the intellectual domain by having students engage in authentic, challenging problem-solving.
Activities include:
Analysis of water quality.
Investigation of vegetation.
Investigation of Microplastics.
Investigation of human impacts, human use and management.
The event begins at 10am and concludes at 2pm.
Schools are encouraged to enter 2 teams.

New to Envirothon 2025:
If schools experience difficulty in releasing a teacher to accompany the students for the day, Awabakal Environmental Education Centre teaching staff, who are Department of Education teachers, can take on the role of supervising students throughout the day. Students would need to be transported to and from the event.
