We are so grateful to have partnered with Historic Virginia Key Beach Park (HVKBP) for several events over the years, a treasured space in Miami that is full of both natural beauty and deep history.
The park opened in 1945 as Miami-Dade County's "Colored-only beach," before the region was connected to the mainland with the construction of the Rickenbacker Causeway. Its 75-year history is filled with stories of park closure, development threats, environmental and historical restoration, and more.
Join us as we dive deeper into this history as it relates to environmental justice and Black access to natural spaces, during a guided historical tour of Virginia Key Beach Park led by Charles Weyman, their Education and Outreach Coordinator.
After the tour, Debris Free Oceans will talk about how single-use plastic contributes to environmental racism throughout each phase of its lifecycle, from production, to use, to disposal, and how reducing your waste can generate positive impacts beyond ecology and into society.
We will close the event with a sunset beach cleanup, supporting the health and beauty of this historical park. All cleanup supplies (gloves, buckets, bags, and grabbers) will be provided.
Spaces limited- RSVP to guarantee your spot. Information about parking and meeting locations will be sent out to registrants ahead of the event.
