This workshop is for poets interested in alternative models for writing about Jerusalem. Together we will read the poems of three historical poets, who were among the earliest English-language writers who chose to make Jerusalem their home.Highly accomplished and influential in their various ways, these poets are Robert Friend (1913-1998), Shirley Kaufman (1923-2016), and Dennis Silk (1928-1998). Writing in English about Jerusalem and publishing around the world, these poets present thought-provoking perspectives about the history as well as the contemporary possibilities for Israeli literature. Reading through their work, we will reflect on the strategies that they developed as we generate our own responses.
Come delve into a strand of lesser-known literary history of Jerusalem as we weave ourselves into this tradition through our own writing!
