Topic 188 - Can You Keep A Secret?
Note: Things to say if you don't want to tell a secret: /that's private, I'm sorry / It's none of your business! [rude] / I'd prefer not to answer that / I can't talk about that / That's confidential / Let's change the subject / [... or you can give a vague or indirect answer, or lie, or even make a joke ]
1. What sort of thing would you keep secret from a) the government; b) your boss; c) a doctor; d) a friend; e) a lover;
Individuals and cultures differ a lot on what should be secret (private information).
2. What kind of secrets (if any) did you sometimes have as a child? Examples?
3. Does your home culture value candid/frank people, or expect people to be more indirect? Examples?
4. What kind of secret might someone just need to keep for a short time? Examples ?
5. What kind of secrets might someone have to keep for years, or a lifetime? Examples?
6. How much 'private space' should you allow your partner in a marriage? [i.e. should partners tell each other everything?
7. Between friends or acquaintances in different cultures there are probably some questions you should not ask. What are examples of questions like this?
8. What secrets should a government keep? [ e.g. In Norway by law the government has few secrets. In some other countries almost everything is a secret ... ] Think of security Vs corruption risks.
9. Australia in each state, and federally, has FOi (Freedom of Information) laws. You can fill out a form to ask about most things the government does. However there is a high charge to get an an answer. Answers can take months to come, and much information might be 'redacted' (blacked out) for 'security or commercial reasons'. Many Australians are not satisfied with FOI laws. If you could write a new FOI law, what should it say?
10. When you change jobs and move to a rival company, how much information about your old employer should you keep secret? [Some companies ask you to sign a 'non-disclosure agreement' ]
