Topic 180 Gifts, Santa's Mailbox, Wishes
Talking Points:
1. How important is gift giving in your family, and in your culture?
2. What kind of gifts do you like to receive?
3. How do you go about choosing gifts to give? What are some examples?
4. Perhaps you have received gifts that you didn't really like or want. Examples? What do you actually say in this situation?
5. When are gifts given (not only in Australia) outside of birthdays and Christmas/New Year?
6. Sometimes we might make a personal birthday or New Year wish. Maybe we don't even tell other people the wish. Can you think of some examples of wishes like this?
7. The idea of Santa Clause for children has more or less spread worldwide, even to places which have no cultural connection to Christmas. Why? What is going on? Do children actually believe the Santa story?
8. In business and politics gifts are often connected to corruption. Examples? What are some arguments for and against this kind of corruption?
9. Some countries have great "natural gifts" like a good climate, or fertile soil, or mineral resources. Other countries are not so lucky. In real life over time, how do "natural gifts" (or their absence) influence the life of people in such countries? Think of real examples.
10. Our personal abilities depend upon a mixture of what we are born with (natural) and our upbringing + opportunities (nurture). How do you think having great natural gifts, or not, influences our personalities? Think of real life examples.
