Engaging Newcomers In Your Volunteer Program

Are you short on volunteers? Have you thought of seeking out new Canadians or international students? Not only will you strengthen your non-profit organization, you will also help these volunteers understand local customs, make new connections, perfect their language skills, and build a cultural bridge between your organization and the community at large. Many newcomers will be seeking opportunities to connect to their new communities and gain local experience through volunteering.

According to the 2016 Census, Greater Victoria has over 350,000 people, of which 65,000 identify as immigrants. Since 2011, almost 7,700 new Canadians have made Victoria their home. Interestingly, those who have been in Canada for less than 10 years have a slightly higher rate of volunteer participation than others who have been in Canada between 10 and 30 years. This may be because they have more time on their hands and are hoping to hone language skills and seek out career development opportunities before becoming fully employed.

In this interactive fun in-person workshop that takes place in the Board Room at Volunteer Victoria you will learn:

• how to ensure your organization is ready to welcome newcomer volunteers

• which volunteer opportunities your organization can offer virtually or socially distant

• steps to recruitment, screening, training, recognition, and evaluation

• tips and tricks to make the volunteer experience positive and rewarding for your organization and your new volunteers

ABOUT YOUR TRAINER:

Over her 35-year working career, Nancy spent seven years overseas. A confirmed internationalist, she has lived and worked in Spain, Germany, the UK and Singapore. During that time, she experienced the hardships of not knowing the local language or customs. Over time, however, those challenges turned to victories, thanks to receiving help from generous locals who were open to taking a chance on a “newbie.”

Most recently, she has been engaging volunteers and raising awareness of their good works with several non-profits including Habitat for Humanity Victoria, Saanich Volunteer Services and Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon.

From planning conferences to evaluating projects and from tutoring new Canadians to sorting books at the Times Colonist Book Drive, Nancy is passionate about volunteering herself. She loves the people she meets, the fulfillment it provides and the new skills she learns.
