Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs): The Path to an Efficient, Cost Effective, Flexible and Modern Electric Grid

To help combact the most significat global challenge that has ever confronted the human race, we must decarbonze our energy sector. Is our grid future-ready to meet this need? Modernizing the grid is necessary to create a sustainable future, and will be made possible with the usage of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs). Join us as Jon Wellinghoff explains GETs as used by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission: discussing the regulatory, financial, and technical context of the deployment of GETs in the nation’s electric grid, exploring each category of GETs technology, and summarizing the potential benefits of widespread GETs deployment in the electric grid.

Jon Wellinghoff is the CEO of GridPolicy, Inc., an internationally recognized consultancy on energy policy, electric grid operations and markets, and the interface of disruptive energy systems with traditional utility structures. In 2006, Jon received his first of two Presidential appointments to serve as a Commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and was designated by the President in 2009 to be Chairman of FERC. He was FERC’s longest serving Chairman (2009-2013). At FERC, he led efforts to make the U.S. grid more efficient and cost effective for consumers. In 2016, the Public Utilities Fortnightly named Jon one of the 10 individuals since 1990 who have had the greatest impact on the electric utility industry.

This talk is part of a series designed to bring together leading researchers across disciplines in science, engineering and business to advance understanding of solutions-focused topics relating to climate and energy.
