Encouraging Vaccine Uptake – Level 2 Course

How many times have you had or overheard a conversation in which a patient refuses a vaccination?

Would you feel confident to begin a conversation with a patient who refuses a vaccination?

Encouraging vaccine uptake isn't just about medicine—it's about people. By registering for this Level 2 course endorsed by the Royal Society of Public Health you will learn skills to tackle one of the most important public health challenges of our time, using both behavioural science and empathy.

This qualification will be appropriate for individuals active in several roles such as practice nurses, health care assistants, care navigators and staff working in reception who have patient contact, social prescribing link workers, health coaches, and wellbeing support workers.

The course commitment is for seven hours of guided learning which will include attendance at a half day face to face training session. There is a multiple-choice assessment to be completed ahead of the qualification being granted. Access to an online toolkit which includes a range of resources to encourage vaccine uptake will be available to staff who take part in the course.

Vaccine hesitancy is the delay in acceptance or outright refusal of vaccines despite the availability of vaccination services.

It’s not the same as being completely anti-vaccine. Instead, it exists on a spectrum—from people who are uncertain or delaying vaccines, to those who only accept some vaccines, to those who refuse all.

Vaccine hesitancy can lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases e.g. measles, lower herd immunity, putting vulnerable groups at risk, and increased healthcare costs and burden on systems which can result in lengthy hospital stays for patients and increased A&E attendances.

Vaccination isn't just a medical issue—it’s a behavioural one. This course will help you understand:

  • Why people hesitate or refuse vaccines
  • How beliefs, culture, misinformation, and trust play into decision-making

This course will cover:

  • How to communicate clearly and empathetically with different audiences
  • How to encourage behaviour change as it relates to vaccination
  • How to build trust in science and public institutions
  • How to counter misinformation effectively (especially on social media).

Course Length: 7 Hours of Guided Learning including attendance at a half day face to face training session
