About this Event
Encore! Concerts for all, big and small
Come join us for a fun and fabulous musical experience at St Andrews Street Baptist Church in Cambridge. We bring live music to everyone from babies to grandparents in a relaxed and informal setting. At Encore! everyone is encouraged to react to music however they want – jumping up and down, dancing, sitting, lying down or drawing pictures inspired by what they have heard. But above all, they learn that music is fun and there’s something very exciting about hearing it live.
Join us for a morning of wonderful music for flute, cello and piano with flautist, Emma Halnan, cellist, Catherine Wilmers and pianist, Jill Morton. Emma and Catherine have both performed individually with Jill, but their concerts in July will be the first time that they have all played together for Encore. The combination of flute, cello and piano is a really interesting one and the trio has some fantastic music to share with you.
Emma Halnan - flute
Since winning the woodwind category of the BBC Young Musician competition in 2010 flautist, Emma has been in high demand for her solo and collaborative performances in the UK and internationally. As a concerto soloist, Emma has performed with orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Mozart Players and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. She has performed live on BBC television and radio, including on Radio 3’s “In Tune” on multiple occasions.
Catherine Wilmers - cello
Catherine’s CD of lovely but neglected works by women composers from the last hundred years was released worldwide by ASV and it received the rare gold award from the French recordings magazine ‘Diapason’. She has performed works from the CD live on ‘In tune’ for BBC Radio 3 and was awarded a London Wigmore Hall debut recital in 1979. For ten years she was sub-principal cellist in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The University of Humboldt, California, USA interviewed her for a radio series on ‘Women in Music’ where she spoke about her experiences as the only female cellist in the LPO cello section in the 1970s. She was invited to play in the Royal Albert Hall Prom in the World Orchestra for Peace.
Jill Morton - piano
Jill started up Encore! in St Neots in 2013. She had been enjoying a busy career as a performer and teacher until 2009 when she took some time out to have her 2 children. Jill really missed the excitement of performing live and wondered how she could combine this with her new role as a Mum. After much thought, the idea of organising concerts where parents and carers could bring children without worrying about them having to sit still or keep quiet was formed.
Jill enjoys a busy career both performing and teaching. Recent concerts have included concerto performances with orchestras in addition to smaller chamber and solo concerts. In addition to her performing career, Jill is a Principal Tutor for the Piano Teachers’ Course UK, the country’s leading professional course for piano pedagogy, and has a successful YouTube channel showcasing the syllabus repertoire on the ABRSM and Trinity graded music syllabuses. She has given masterclasses at universities and specialist music schools throughout Britain and is recognised as a competition adjudicator. She also teaches at the Perse school in Cambridge.
