At the first Kitchen Table Songwriters Series concert in November, a large and enthusiastic audience confirmed our belief that Southern Illinois is home to a host of good musicians, among them talented and prolific songwriters.
The second concert of the series is Saturday, Jan. 25 and continues to showcase regional songwriters.
This series, which is produced by the Varsity and Mila Maring and John Reimbold, will feature Ol’ Moose, Lucas Wayne and Hugh DeNeal. The show is sponsored by Carbondale Hearing Center and is supported by Damian Decorating and an anonymous donor.
This series is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
The show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Doors and the Varsity Bar open at 6. Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at Eventbrite (see link). They also will be available at the venue on the night of the show.
The next in the series is scheduled for March 22 and will feature the Cattails, Boscoe & Whiteford, and Wil Maring and Robert Bowlin.
The Varsity is in in the heart of downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. For more, go to www.thevarsitycenter.org for more on the historic venue and upcoming events.
The artists:
Ol’ Moose with traditional folk music and lots of country blues, learning how to finger-pick on the guitar. Playing with friends in New England at coffee houses and bars, he had the privilege of playing occasionally with some really wonderful transient blues players including John Jackson and Larry Johnson. I started writing songs, worked in a sawmill, and picked up the nickname “Moose” from loading a piano onto a flatbed truck for weekend music jaunts to local towns. Ol’ Moose eventually and started the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band with well-known singer-songwriters John Gorka, Richard Shindell, and Russ Rentler. Since then, he has played Americana music in Germany, China, Ireland and around the U.S. He says that now that he’s old, the nickname has simply transitioned to Ol’ Moose.
Lucas Wayne is a storyteller at heart singing about the quirks of everyday characters and the experiences of growing up in rural Eastern Kentucky and Southen Illinois. Classically trained, his vocal range and natural vibrato leaves crowds stunned. Wayne's songs are simultaneously funny and devastatingly sad, captivating audiences in bars, halls, and anywere he can as a solo artist. He is touring now with his band, The Cottonmouths, whose members have toured extensively with Vince Herman Band, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and many more. Lucas Wayne's mix of Country, Bluegrass, and Folk make a sound that is both refreshingly new and also timeless.
Hugh DeNeal is known mostly for his role as primary singer and songwriter for the Trashcan Americana group, Woodbox Gang. The band performed their dark and humorous tunes for audiences across the country for years and still plays at least one show a year in Southern Illinois. Hugh now performs solo and with his band, The People vs Hugh DeNeal. The majority of songs explore the unsettling aspects of human existence, offset with a wry sense of humor that invites the audience along for a twisted and joyful ride.
