Beginners are welcome in this introductory workshop where we learn hands-on about creating with the fascinating medium of encaustic beeswax. We will learn the proper temperature for melting our encaustic medium, how to use our griddles as a palette, safe and effective use of our butane torches and heat guns to fuse our layers properly. It’s a novel, messy, melty, and intriguing process. You’ll learn enough to get you started in this wonderful, historic medium that still captures the hearts and minds of artists today.Open to all levels - beginners are welcome.
Students, please dress for a mess with a canvas apron or heavy smock.
About the artist:
Betsy Schairer is a Pacific Northwest artist and craftsperson based in Poulsbo, Washington. She studied Fiber Arts and Art Education at Western Washington University. Her work focuses on existential themes of embodiment, disembodiment, and the beyond. Her illustrative layered mixed media processes incorporate vintage textiles, papers, and ephemera. Her work is candid, expressive, and instinctive, using vibrant colors and bold patterning.

What is encaustic painting?
Encaustic painting involves shaping a hot resin-and-beeswax-based medium that, when cooled, features a luminous quality. The age-old technique originated in Ancient Greece and continued to be popular throughout the Roman Empire and the Byzantine era. It also allows the artist to incorporate other materials in the medium and create collage effects. Due to the flexible nature of this technique, it has been appropriated by modern and contemporary artists in new ways
