En Concert: Chris, Jing & Adam « The Poet Speaks: Schumann’s Masterpieces »
About this Event

KinMusique is excited to host a concert of art songs featuring Chris Knopp, pianist, Jing Xu, mezzo-soprano and Adam Schmidt, tenor.

Robert Schumann was one of the greatest musical geniuses of the 19th Century. Aided by light staging, we will be transported into his living room to enjoy four great works for piano and voice.

Liederkreis, Op. 39, has been critiqued as his greatest work for piano and voice. In it, we encounter a series of passionate vignettes which deal with journeys far from home, myths that continue to ring true, and love that must be won. Kinderszenen is a set of short piano pieces that portray scenes from a child’s life. Some are cute, some are endearing, and some are unexpectedly poetic. Dichterliebe tells the story of a poet who deals with passionate but ultimately unrequited love. This is perhaps Schumann’s most famous cycle of vocal songs, and has left deep marks in the history of classical music. Finally, Liebesgarten, a set of four duets for voices and piano, is a story of young love complete with playful flirting, deep affection and moments of inspiring reflection.

BIOGRAPHY:

Chris Knopp began his musical journey at the age of 8, taking piano lessons with Gayle Kooistra in his hometown of Surrey, BC. Since then, he has won many prizes and awards for his playing and has been honoured to perform concerti with three different orchestras. He often performs in collaboration with strings players, vocalists and choirs, and especially enjoys the intimacy of performing art song and chamber music.

Highlights of Chris’s performing career include a recording of Dichterliebe with tenor Adam Schmidt, performances of Pierrot Lunaire with Kyrian Friedenberg conducting, and a concert of cello sonatas with Ben Goheen.

Jingjing Xu is a 22-year-old mezzo soprano from Nanjing, China. She completed her bachelor’s of music in voice performance studying with Jie Zho at the Nanjing University of the Arts, and is currently in the first year of her Master’s degree at McGill. She studies with Annamaria Popescu, with whom she has worked on many arias by Handel and Rossini. She made her Canadian operatic debut as the title role of Orlando with Opera McGIll in Spring of 2022. In addition to opera, she has a passion for art song, and has recently performed songs by Schumann, Wolf, Schubert, Faure and Brahms. When she is not making music, she loves to cook, and often improvises dishes based on her inspiration at the moment.

Emotions are the core of what humans are – at least that’s what tenor Adam Schmidt believes. The purpose of art is to experience emotion on our own terms and in doing so learn about ourselves and others. That connection to humanity is why Adam left Engineering and became a musician. His young career has taken him all over the United States and Canada, and to parts of Europe to perform opera, oratorio, and song. Dichterliebe is his longest running, and one of his most beloved, single projects since he and Chris Knopp began performing it together three years ago.
